New to Buying Tires? A Plain-English Guide to Ordering Online With Confidence

Tires are one of those purchases nobody teaches you about, and the shop talk (load index, offset, run-flat) can make anyone feel lost. Here is the simple version, and how Tire Agent helps you buy without feeling pressured.

I like to understand something before I spend money on it. So instead of a sales pitch, here are the questions I’d ask first, with answers drawn from what Tire Agent actually states on its website.

The questions I’d ask first

Where do I even start?

The site says you can shop by vehicle, by tire size or by brand, and add tires, wheels or both to the same cart. If you do not know your size, start from your vehicle.

Do I have to find an installer myself?

No. At checkout you can send the order to one of Tire Agent’s installer partners (the network has more than 2,000). The tires ship to the shop, and you call to book the fitting. You can also have them delivered home and, where available, book a mobile installer who comes to you.

What does delivery cost?

According to the site, delivery is free to continental U.S. addresses, with in-stock tires targeted for 2 to 4 business days. Timing can vary with availability, location and weather.

What if I order the wrong thing?

Returns are accepted within 30 days for unused tires and wheels that have not been mounted. You pay return shipping on tires matching your order (the site estimates $25 to $40 per tire) unless it was Tire Agent’s error. Damaged or incorrect tires can be reported through a Shipment Issues form for a refund or exchange.

A tiny glossary, so the jargon stops being scary

Tire Agent’s blog has plain-language guides for the terms that confuse people most. I’d read these before ordering:

What are the different types of tires

Types of tires

Summer, all-season, winter, off-road: the guide explains the main categories.

What is tire load index

Load index

A number that tells you how much weight a tire can carry.

What are run-flat tires

Run-flat tires

The guide asks whether they are worth it for you.

8 affordable tire brands that deliver value

Value brands

Eight brands that balance price and quality.

My rule: do not buy anything until you can explain, in one sentence, why you picked that tire. If you cannot, read the relevant guide first.

Paying for it without stress

Unexpected expenses are the hardest part. Besides cards and wallets (Affirm, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Afterpay and Cash App Pay), Tire Agent offers PayPair: one application, several partner payment plans. The site says it will not affect your credit score, no credit score is required and some plans may have no money down, though approval is not guaranteed. It is U.S. only.

Money matters
Buy tires and rims with low FICO, bad credit, no credit check

Please read the fine print. Tire Agent notes that lease-to-own plans cost more than the cash price, and you do not own the tires until you use a buyout option or complete all payments. If you can pay in full, it is cheaper. If you cannot, a plan can still be useful, as long as you know the real cost.

Little extras that give peace of mind

  • Rebates: manufacturers such as Goodyear (up to $100), BFGoodrich ($80), Cooper ($70) and Mickey Thompson ($100) offer money back on a set of four select tires, with deadlines and claim rules. Check the deals page for eligible models.
  • Road hazard protection at checkout (not in CA, WA, HI, AK or DC): flat fix and replacement, roadside assistance and more.
  • Manufacturer warranties carry over to you, and Tire Agent helps with claims.
  • Referral program: a $25 gift card for each friend who makes a first purchase.

Tire Agent says it has a 4.8 out of 5 rating based on 19,237 reviews on Shopper Approved. Reviews are the company’s own figures, so I always like to skim a couple of independent ones too.

If you are ready, take a look at Tire Agent at your own pace: check your size, read a guide, compare brands and see which rebates apply. You do not have to decide today.
